ABSTRACT

Due to extensive application of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feed, antimicrobial resistance has been increased. To overcome this challenge, rumen microbiologists search for new probiotics to improve the rate of livestock production. The present study was aimed to isolate and evaluate breed-specific lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as potential animal probiotics. The current study was conducted during 10 months from July 2020 to April 2021, in which a total of n=12 strains were isolated from different samples including milk, rumen, and feces of Nilli Ravi Buffaloes. These isolates were evaluated for their antimicrobial potential against common animal pathogens (Bacillus spp., E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Listeria spp.). All the isolates were identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and the phylogenetic analyses inferred that these strains showed close relations to the species of various genera; Enterococcus lactis, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Bacillus subtilis Weissella cibaria, Weissella soli, Bacillus tequilensis, Weissella bombi, Bacillus licheniformis, Lactococcus lactis, Bacillus megaterium, Lactobacillus ruminis, and Lactococcus lactis. NMCC-Ru2 has exhibited the enormous potential of antimicrobial activity, 28 mm, for Salmonella typhimurium;23 mm for Listeria monocytogenes 21 mm for E.coil. Highest resistance was seen in NMCC-Ru2 agasint test antbiotic, like 25.5 mm for Tetracycline. Overall results revesl that the probiotic profile of isolates was achieved using standard criteria, particularly with animal probiotic properties

ABSTRACT

Asiatic black bear is present in variety of habitats like broad-leaves and coniferous forests, extending form sea level to 4300m elevation and change their habitat for food purpose seasonally. The present study was conducted at Kaghan and Siran Valleys, District Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan to assess habitat of black bear. Line transect method was used for observation of bear signs. Twelve meter circular radius plots were selected for the concern vegetation’s i.e. (trees, shrubs and herbs) and three to six plots were placed in each transect. At the result of sign survey, thirteen different categories of bear signs were recorded and encounter rate was calculated for each sign. A total of 1858 signs were observed during field surveys. Total (81%) coniferous species were recoded among trees, with the highest appearance of Pinus wallichiana (34.22%) and Spruce spp (27.76%), similarly broad leaves trees (18.56%) were also recoded from habitat plots. Most of the signs were encountered in bushy areas, whereas high number of Viburnum Spp (60.29%) was present. It is indicated that black bear prefers blend of Coniferous Trees, Viburnum and Ferns Species; probably because these plants provide enough food, protection, and meticulous shelter because more than 80% of habitat composed of these three species. Currently habitat destruction and increase in human population are the up-growing issues for wild animals (especially Asiatic black bear), which is highly sensitive to such problems. High levels of conservation efforts are recommended for the protection of black bear habitat and to avoid human interference in their territory.

ABSTRACT

The main objective of current study was to investigate the chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity of Artemisia vulgaris extract on diethylnitrosoamine induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Balb C mice. Diethylnitrosoamine (DEN: 0.9%) was prepared to induce hepatocarcinoma in Balb C mice. The extract Artemisia vulgaris (AV) was prepared by maceration technique. Mice were classified into four groups as follows: Group 1 a control group (N=7) received saline solution (3.5 l/mg), group 2 (N=14) received diethylnitrosoamine (3.5 l/mg) intraperitoneally once in a week for eight consecutive weeks, group 3 (N=7) received only plant extract (AV: 150 mg/kg (Body weight) once in a week, while group 4 (N=7) was given in combination of diethylnitrosoamine (3.5 l/mg) and plant extract (AV: 150 mg/kg (body weight). After eight weeks of DEN administration, mice of group 2 were divided into two subgroups containing seven mice each; subgroup 1 was sacrificed while subgroup 2 was treated with plant extract only (150 mg/kg (body weight)) once in a week for eight consecutive weeks. The DEN injected mice significant decline in levels of albumin with concomitant significant elevations such as aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, alpha feto protein, gamma glutamyl transferase, 5 nucleotidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and bilirubin. The administration of A. vulgaris significantly decreased the DEN induced hepatotoxicity. Present study revealed the potential anti-cancerous nature of Artemisia vulgaris, both in case of chemopreventive and post-treatment of A. vulgaris. Further studies are needed to explore the mechanism of prevention and therapy.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of the present study was to develop a new topical dosage form containing Pyrus communis fruit extract. Developed formulation was O/W Emulgel which was evaluated by its in vitro tests and its stability studies at different storage conditions. Methods: Hydroalcoholic Pyrus communis extract was prepared by the maceration process. A 4% Pyrus communis emulgel was prepared by the combination of emulsion and gel at a specific temperature and mixing through homogenizers. The formulations having different concentration of carbopol 940 (gelling agent) were placed at 8 °C, 25 °C, 40 °C and 40 °C+75%RH for 3 mo in order to find out the most stable formulation. After the selection of final emulgel formulation was eventually further evaluated for in vitro studies such as phase separation, centrifugation, rheology, pH, conductivity, organoleptic properties and mean droplet size over a period of 12 w at 8 °C, 25 °C, 40 °C and 40 °C+75%RH. Results: In vitro evaluation of the selected Pyrus communis emulgel formulation showed good resistance to phase separation on centrifugation, conductivity gradually increases due to oil in water emulgel and pH of formulation was gradually decreased. The rheological behavior was non-Newtonian pseudoplastic and showed shear thinning fluid behavior. Mean droplet size of Pyrus communis emulgel was 16.0±0.20 µm and after 90 d droplet size was 16.7±0.55 µm at high storage temperatures at 40 °C and 40 °C+75RH and no significant changes were observed at normal storage conditions at 8 °C and 25 °C. Conclusion: Pyrus communis emulgel fresh fruit extract showed stable formulation at different storage conditions. This new formulation will be a good addition to pharmaceutical dosage forms made from traditionally used plants.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The main objective of current study was to investigate the chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity of Artemisia vulgaris extract on diethylnitrosoamine induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Balb C mice.

ABSTRACT

Our aim in this study is to give a broad overview of the main ethical and legal challenges of pharmaceutical marketing. The purpose of this study was also to investigate unethical pharmaceutical marketing, the effect on physicians of receiving gifts, the influences of perceptions regarding the importance of ethics and social responsibility on ethical intentions of marketing professionals. It also investigates the effect of unethical marketing on ultimate consumer (patient). Questionnaire based survey study was conducted from two main categories: (i) physicians/consultants and (ii) pharmaceutical companies. In Pakistan, there is no mechanism to monitor the drug promotional campaign by pharmaceutical industry despite the fact that there is enough evidence that irrational pharmacotherapy is increasingly encountered even in the developed countries due to unethical practices of pharmaceutical promotion. Medical practitioners and the pharmaceutical industry serve interests that sometimes overlap and sometimes conflict. There is strong evidence that associations between industry and physicians influence the behaviour of the latter in relation to both clinical decision making and ethical promotion of drugs. The basic principles underlying the conduct of physicians with respect to pharmaceutical companies should be openness and transparency.

ABSTRACT

Olmsted syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by symmetrical sharply marginated mutilating keratoderma of palms & soles & hyperkeratotic plaques around the body orifices, onychodystrophy, ainhum & amputation of digital phalanges, flextion deformities of the fingers, localized alopecia, leukokeratosis of the tongue, shortness of stature & laxity of large joints. Inheritance is autosomal dominant, although sporadic cases have been reported. Here we describe two cases of this rare disorder with thickened hyperkeratotic lesion over palm & soles & along with amputation of 3rd , 4th & 5th toes in one case. In one of our case (case no. 2) the immediate younger brother has got the same disease. Both of them were treated with tab. Neotegason 25 mg orally daily for 3 months & there was significant improvement after treatment.

ABSTRACT

Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) are generally similar in their clinical features, epidemiology and etiology although their natural and clinical history and treatment differ. Despite lot of improvement in diagnostic and management technique, there is little improvement in survival rate over the last few decades. This study was carried-out in a multidisciplinary tertiary level hospital (BSMMU), with a country-wide catchment area to see the burden of HNSCC existing in our country and their clinical pattern. The overall incidence rate of HNSCC in this study was (0.15%) i.e. 150 person in 1,00,000 population. Male incidence (0.19%) was higher than female (0.12%). This study revealed that carcinoma of the larynx (25.22%) and pyriform fossae (20.57%) were the main culprit, whereas buccal carcinoma was the main component (37.70%) in the female series. Highest incidence was found in the 6th decade in both sexes. As the treatment of HNSCC may be time consuming, requires multidisciplinary approach, demands lot of clinical, social and financial consideration, therefore, the best treatment can be offered through a combined board consisting of Surgical, Radiation, Medical oncologists, Histopathologist and Speech therapist as required.

ABSTRACT

Patch Test was done in 340 suspected allergic contact dermatitis patients having different ages of both sexes during the period of January 2000 to December 2003 in the department of Dermatology and Venerology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka. Of these 340 cases 145 (42.65%) were male and 195 (57.35%) were female. Among these 340 cases, 250 (73.53%) cases were tested with international standard series allergen (ISS) and 90 (26.47%) cases with cosmetic series allergen (CSS), of which patch test was positive in 125 (50%) cases and 65 (72.22%) cases respectively. The 125 positive cases with ISS consisted of 56% male and 44% female. In 65 CSS positive cases 90.77% were female and 9.23% were male. Highest incidence of positive patch test was found in 61.54% cases in the age group of 30-39 years in ISS and 71.43% cases in the age group of 20-29 yrs in CSS. In ISS--Potassium Dichromate (19.2%), Fragrance mix (17.6%), Nickel Sulphate (15.2%) and PPD (11.2%) were found to be the common allergen and in CSS--Octyl Gallate (27.69%), Getrimide (18.92%), Balsum of Peru (15.38%), Thiomersal (12.31%) were found to be the common allergens.

ABSTRACT

Serosurvillance of 650 children of clinically suspected dengue infection based on simple laboratory tests were evaluated to find out the early indicator for diagnosis of dengue infection. The study was conducted among the patients attending the Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC) and Mitford Hospital and Popular Diagnostic Center, Dhaka, during July 2002 to September 2002. Of these 650 suspected dengue cases, 294 were in the age group 1-5 years, 206 were in age group 6-10 years and 150 cases in age group 11-15 years, of which Seropositivity was found in 78 (26.53%), 60 (24.12%) and 65 (43.33%) cases respectively. Primary dengue IgM was positive in 123 (60.59%) cases and secondary dengue (IgG & IgM combined or IgG alone) was positive in 80 (39.41%) cases. Leucopenia was found in 90 (75%) cases and Thrombocytopenia was found in 95 (79.16%) cases in primary dengue cases. Similarly in secondary dengue cases TWBC and PLT was decreased in 60 (72.29%) and 65 (78.15%) cases respectively. Haemoconcentration was found in 40 (36.67%) cases of primary dengue and 13 (18%) cases in secondary dengue. Month wise distribution of dengue seropositivity shows that 10 (8.53%) cases was found in July, 175 (50.10%) cases in August and 78 (10.00%) cases in September. This study reveals that seropositivity is highest (43.33%), in the age group 11-15 years and incidence of dengue increased in the month of August. Leucopenia (WBC <or= 5000) and Thrombocytopenia (Patelet count <or= 100000) were two findings that help in the early diagnosis of dengue infection.

ABSTRACT

Stroke is commonly followed by some form of psychiatric disturbance. Association and severity of depression at the 3rd and 12th months after stroke in patients and controls were compared. Two registers of stroke patients were maintained over 2 years period in two different centers--one in Barisal Town and other in Mitford Hospital, Dhaka. A total of 297 first-ever strokes were registered. These patients were called back at the 3rd and 12th month interview and assessment. Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), with 10 as the cut off point for depression, was applied to 161 of 212 survivors at the 3rd month and to 156 of 195 survivors at the 12th month. At the 3rd month, 41% of patients and 18% of controls were depressed (P<.001) and the difference was maintained at the 12th month 42% versus 19% (P<.05). Univariate risk factors for depression at the 3rd month were female sex, severe prognostic score at the onset of stroke, age more than 70 years, family history of stroke and living alone after stroke. Depression was common among stroke survivors at the 3rd months and its rate did not decrease at 1 year follow-up. Depression could be decreased if post-stroke rehabilitation services are improved. After the development of depression earlier diagnosis and management help a lot to the patients and care givers.
